Having lived in the China clay area in Cornwall from childhood into adulthood, Nik has seen this wonderfully contradictary landscape change and develop through the years. Some would say its a uniquely beautiful place, but most would say its the industrial black spot of Cornwall. This negative view is changing, Nik is one of a generation able to embrace the clay environment, and chooses not to see it as an ugly baron wasteland but a dramatic fertile environment.
Her paintings depict a moody landscape full of mystery, starlight and colour. She says " Living in the china clay area in Cornwall brings me into contact with the dramatic landscape and its history every day. A series of my paintings are illustrations for a children’s book based on a childhood exploring the clay tips."
Niks hare paintings have a similar quality to that of her clay district work, a mixture of magic and melancholy again lit with star light and moon light. Niks hare paintings are a popular choice for commissions, painting these alone is enough to keep her busy.

Nik has begun work on a collection of painted hands each decorated in a style to suit the individuals personality, this project is ever evolving and could continue until there are thousands in the collection. She says "The Hand paintings are individual portraits. I am looking to extend this idea into a community project; the final piece will be made up of many different hands painted on canvas, some of which will be done by the individuals themselves."
Its a gift that Nik can see and describe a persons personality on canvas using particular colours and brush marks. When looking at her facial portraits a real person with depth, complexity of mood and character looks out, she doesn’t only paint a portrait, she paints a portrait that speaks volumes.
It goes without saying that to achieve this level of work Nik uses a sometimes subtle and sometimes brave and bold blend of materials and techniques. She uses acrylic, tissue paper and pastels all adding their own signature to her work making her art always individual and delightful.
